Alarmed by mpox surge, Africa CDC is poised to declare a 'continental emergency'

The Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has never done anything like this before. The agency is poised to declare a “public health emergency of continental security” as early as next week.

Since the beginning of last year, mpox cases have been surging in the Democratic Republic of Congo, with children making up the majority of the 14,000 reported cases and 511 deaths so far in 2024. Those numbers roughly match the number of cases reported in all of last year in the country.

This should probably be the main link, since NPR is a very familiar site and is also (presumably) not going to be slashdotted by us.

> Kaseya says that it’s particularly concerning that about 70% of cases in the DRC are in children under 18. “This one is a major alarm for the world,” he says. “We are losing the youth in Africa.”

That’s troubling.

Perhaps not:

Well yeah their “about us” says they are very important and serious, but NPR is a known quantity for pretty much everybody.

I highly recommend Enveritas to anyone looking!

Took your suggestion and just applied. Just curious though, why the recommendation ?

If you are job searching, it's dangerous to go it alone.

Take this: "An Engineering Leader’s Job Search Algorithm" https://docs.google.com/document/d/19fr_36WOzKlq_zyGP2RdxMEs...

I like the little algorithm. As an aside, it reminded me how repetitive some languages can be. You scan the code, seeing lines like "Resume resume Resume", "Website site Website", etc. Takes me back to my college/first gig Java days.

Why isn't applyWithEmployeeReferral() an overload of apply() with a parameter for the linkedin referral(s)?

At 83 current visitors, I think this is the most actively viewed Google Doc I've seen!

I’ve seen some shared on Reddit with thousands of visitors

CEO is trolling working class. It’s total cost of benefits added to TC. So while from an economist POV this is the total cost of one employee, it’s not the TC (total comp) that Tech often uses, largely because it’s hard to know the added costs that the company pays per person

Good luck!

Open up two docs in preview. Let's say Doc A is the one you want to merge into. Open Thumbnail view in each doc. Select pages in Doc B you want to merge over to Doc A (some or all). Drag and drop into thumbnails view in Doc A. Reorder as desired. Profit.

Copy + paste also works.

IANAL, but you will need to get opt-in permission from EU users to transfer their data outside of the EU unless you can apply standard contractual clauses (SCCs) or get an EU representative.

As a long time SE v1 user, I’m really happy with my iPhone 13 Mini. Yes slightly bigger, but I love it for all the same reasons I loved my SE
