There's a part in the documentary where they're interviewing the record label owner and when they ask him about it he immediately flips out and ends the interview.

I dunno about that, every time Sugar man or I Wonder started playing when I was growing up, someone would tell me "This guy isn't famous anywhere else! No-one even knows where he is!". I must have been told this factoid 20 times when I was a teenager.

Hmmmmm... In which decade where you a teenager?

Most likely their second decade.

Nice.

FYI you can make something very similar by mixing silicon sealant and chalk powder/cornstarch

That's kind of neat. I haven't used sugru before, I feel like if I just wanted to try it out I would buy the name brand, of course, but if I needed something similar in bulk I will remember this!

This is exactly what I was looking for, thanks!

You forgot to mention the "click on this one specific checkbox or your source code is now leaked to the entire internet forever" part. So actually, not that simple and potentially much much worse.

Git != Github

Just using git on a local machine is nothing like this, unless there's something large I'm missing.

This is just "copying to a flash drive" with extra steps.

Except you also get a better history (assuming you write good commit messages), and it's all in the same folder.

You could also use git-send-email to make a mailing "list" with just yourself, and that way make it much easier to move between machines as you work. Or if you don't trust your email hosting provider, self host gitea or sourcehut (or have the option to later).

Finally, you also get the ability to better organize development with branches.

I don't even know git that well and came up with that off the top of my head.

Git doesn't require an internet connection. With git you can keep doing backups the same way and store the git repository in flash drives, Dropbox, Amazon Glacier, or anywhere you want. The main difference here is that you don't need one folder per version anymore.

Git has no checkboxes. It is purely command line. Are you talking about Github or Gitlab? I know Gitlab used to have this bug where you could easily accidentally give everyone access to all your repos.

No fully true, there is gitk and git-gui (both part of the full-git-package)...but yeah no "publish to internet" checkbox there ;)

Lights in the UK have a small cone on the bottom of the button box that turns when the light is green https://www.bbc.com/news/blogs-ouch-22706881

We're also currently trialling Bluetooth add-on transceivers to the cone functionality to make crossing even easier.

One of the problems of the cones is that once the cone turns you often need to reposition yourself in the centre of the entry to the crossing before setting off (in order not to stray into traffic or bump into barriers).

With the prototype Bluetooth beacon your device can receive the signal when it is safe to cross whilst you're stood in the centre of the entry.

“I was waiting at the pedestrian crossing, holding onto the small metal cone, when someone grabbed my hand, like when you grab a small metal cone.

It turned out..”

This could become some kind of romantic movie.

Tax rates on the rich are at historically low levels. Rich people would still get UBI but the top level tax rate would effectively cancel it out (and more). Current welfare wastes a lot of money on admin/staff/fraud investigations and none of that would be needed with UBI since everyone gets it.

People would still want money. UBI isn't going to be enough for a lavish lifestyle, people will still want to work. It would make lower-paying activities like art/open source more viable though.

> Tax rates on the rich are at historically low levels

Not really. The income tax didn't exist before 1913 and the government was way smaller so there wasn't a even need to collect a lot of taxes. Are you thinking of the 50s? Because even in that time people just avoided to declare all their income (it was easier back then) or used other loop holes to avoid paying taxes [1]

Exactly, changing the tax RATE is not going to do anything. Plugging up the trickery to not report income is more important

> Current welfare wastes a lot of money on admin/staff/fraud investigations and none of that would be needed with UBI

Not to mention a lot of other social programs that would be folded into UBI and eliminated overnight. Social security, food stamps, rent assistance.... That's not enough savings to pay for UBI, but it's an appreciable chunk.

And the existence of UBI would imply the existence of a national registry, which would drastically change the equations regarding illegal immigration. Border enforcement becomes a lot less important to some anti-immigrant demographics, if those immigrants cannot receive any welfare. Police for fraud, sure, but maybe you don't need as many fences and armed guards patrolling the border?

I'm just saying the knock-on effects of such a drastic shift in society would be huge, so expecting a simple comparison of current costs and revenues is so simplistic that it's guaranteed to be off by a lot.

Yes! Just search eBay/AliExpress. They work and sound great. I get the appeal of having nice things, but earbuds? They're tiny plastic things that just sit in your ear and could easily fall down a sewer grate at any moment.

Knowing what I know about the expected quality of things found on AliExpress, I'm hesitant to put batteries found there in my ears.

You overestimate the quality of your "trusted" brands.

Nearly every problem I've ever had with electronic components in my life has been caused by counterfeits that either lie about their capabilities, lie about what they're made of, or lie about whether they were QC tested. Maybe that means the SD card only stores a few real megabytes before trashing all of your photos. Maybe that means your phone charger destroys your phone. Maybe that means the battery in your ear explodes [0]. The thing about trusted brands is that at least they have brands to protect.

Does it mean they are costlier than Patreon?

Patreon originally had a 5% cut + the payment fee, before their new higher fee structure
