Martha Stewart: Why I Love My Drone (time.com)

I can't tell if she's parodying herself with this bit:

The shots of my farm were breathtaking and showed not only a very good landscape design — thanks to the surveyors and landscapers who worked with me on the overall vision, much as le Notre worked with Louis XIV — they also showed me what more I can do in the future, and revealed unexpected beauty.

I mean really... she's comparing herself to Louis XIV?

From the subtitle

Because it's a useful tool. And imagine what Louis XIV could have accomplished at Versailles if he'd had one

I think she's just referring back to that.

and also she tries to suggest comparison of her farm landscape design to Versailles. I can only laugh at that attempt of even slight metal connection of these rough primitive rectangles ( http://d2dvlr1w1gfn2q.cloudfront.net/-WvojxK_0cwk/U7wxD1i4GD... ) with an idea of a European palace park - while i never been to Versailles, i spent bunch of years in St.Petersburg ( http://www.russiantourguide.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/P... ) where stuff was built ideologically following Versailles (http://www.versaillespourtous.fr/fr/vuduciel/chateau/diapora... ) and the likes.

"In our age, each individual is responsible for knowing that sometimes “N.S.A.” means “No Strings Attached” and sometimes it means “String City.” "

I wasn't too hot on the whole thing, but this line is killer.

If you need some 4K/5K drone footage with RED Epics.. http://londonhelicam.co.uk :)

4K showreel here - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mrDF4ju6CC0

Is it just me or did she just invite everyone to fly drones over her property and take pictures?

Is it just me, or is the real world closely emulating 80s/90s cyberpunk literature?

"William Gibson Correctly Predicts the Internet of 2013"

http://www.somethingawful.com/news/gibson-neuromancer-twitte...

"Vektor extracted the Corsair 32 gigabyte thumb drive from the inside pocket of his pea coat and slotted the stick into his Dell Inspiron's port. The solid state memory activated instantly, a small LED washing green as the operating system recognized the device. ...

The funny thing is, that spoof is basically what Gibson did seriously in the 2000s with the Bigend trilogy, setting stories in the present where he somehow gets iBooks to feel as exotic as Ono-Sendais.

It's why Gibson doesn't write "in the future" anymore, we're already in that world.

Probably just you, I haven't seen any Deliverator, nor has a girl in leather approached me in a bar asking what was I did night after night at my computer.

Maybe you're going to the wrong bars. :)

I love living in the future

Could you please elaborate?

Well, we have autonomous drones becoming a mainstream thing (written about by TV personalities), we have anonymous distributed data transfer and even value transfer (!) networks. The government is working hard to eliminate digital privacy. Large IP holders are lobbying the government to regulate data ownership. Massive networks of anonymous users coordinate through message boards and social networks to perform human action on a massive scale. Individuals flee their home countries and become icons in international politics because they are, effectively, data smugglers. There are entire organizations dedicated to disseminating data that government interests are fighting to keep secret. Wearable electronics are coming of age. Electronic surveillance is ubiquitous. Police militarization is increasing significantly. Internet-based physible replication technologies (like 3D printers) are coming of age.

I thought this was going to be a parody article or at least anything other than a story about how Martha Stewart has a drone and loves it. But alas, Martha Stewart is more tech savvy then I have ever given her credit for. That's really awesome Martha, have fun with your drone.

In 1998 she had a server in her basement? That is a little bit of a shock.

This, along with "UN discusses plans to ban 'killer robots'", are the two recent headlines that convinced me I'm living in the future.

Related - Just published a huge 10k word article about drones/quads, how to get started, fly and modify them. :) http://paulstamatiou.com/getting-started-with-drones-quadcop...

This is an awesome article, Paul. I really dig the layout of your site, too. I've been flying Lumenier quads for about 6 months, and just ordered their plug-and-play gimbal for my QAV400. It arrives today!

Sharing your article with friends that want a smooth entry to drone exploration.

wow, just wanted to say it's an awesome post - so much useful information in a really comprehensive and easy to read format. well done!

Cool, that was fun to peruse. Any comments on the Parrot AR drone? Is it worth looking into or just a dud?

Battery life is short. You need at least two batteries so you can fly uninterrupted. My parrot drone has 12 mins battery which is short. Just when you're enjoying flying the battery runs low.

A coworker has one, looks like a decent and relatively cheap choice, but it seems the others recommended have better battery life.

Edit: looking on Amazon, there's a 2-battery version which looks good.

Really cool, thank you !!.

"I did my best to master the moves and angles that would result in most arresting pictures and video."

Heh. Arresting. Heh.
