I do see generalization happening more and more, but I think it's a result of more and more smart, but untrained, people entering web development, rather than any natural or desirable trend toward generalization. I invoke Crozier's Rule of 10: when you rank your level of expertise in 2 or more fields, the sum is never greater than 10.
