IIRC, I saw :before used to great effect in print stylesheets for turning links into plain-text URLs.

Personally I think to add an icon (using an icon font or possibly a data uri) is a great (and proper) use-case for displaying content with either the :before or :after selector.

This is not a "proper" use case. I am not able to understand why one would want to "view" Markup in Markdown?
