Uncertainty is part of being human, so how can we learn to live with it? (theguardian.com)

I think there are two keys to understanding and potentially overcoming this fear of uncertainty. The first is individual resilience. If someone has high confidence in their ability to overcome unexpected situations, then uncertainty can shift from a risk to a benefit. The other aspect is track record. If people have a history of uncertainty leading to bad outcomes, they are naturally wary of it.

It would be interesting to know if the author had any specific experiences that shifted their perception of uncertainty from fun to more anxiety prone. Did they have some bad trips that made them more cautious?

Certainty can be an illusion that traps us in a world of limited possibilities. If you want to be certain about your future, then don't ever travel, stay at your current job, and avoid meeting new people. A culture geared towards risk aversion will work towards maintaining the status quo more than producing tangible results.
