You cannot remove it. You just need to set it visible only to you, set it not visible on your timeline.

And then setup another public email which you will have to show to everyone instead. I'm pretty sure you didn't have to do that before.

I don't think the above is true. I currently have two email addresses in my profile. My personal one, and the Facebook one. Both are set to "Me Only", and also "Hidden from profile"
