I wish people had a better sense of a thought experiment distinct from a formal, legal test. Because the Turing test is, and always has been a discussion point, not a legalism. It is not an actual "thing" any more than Voight-Kampf.
The competition was silly. It was adjudication to the best chatbot.
We don't have a philosopher in a cave. There is no Chinese book there. Infinite tape for a Turing machine hasn't been available since before we stopped using baudot code.
In the highly unlikely case that AGI comes into being, person hood will become interesting. Arguably. If we succeed in inter species communication and can converse about introspective topics, philosophy, we're going to need tests to personhood before we have AGI. I could handle calling something in that space a Turing test but I suspect we'll give it another name.
