Amboy – a Mojave Desert ghost town and Americana icon fights to survive (latimes.com)

What's the carrying capacity of this region? Without importing fuel, food, building materials, and water, what would the ground Amboy occupies look like? When is it okay to let infrastructure expire? How was this land used 500 years ago?

Passing through on a bicycle trip, I slept in the Amboy post office years ago. I appreciate that it was there and the door was unlocked (to give people access to their PO boxes, presumably), but I would have set up my tent otherwise. Amboy was not a destination, just an incidental location along the way, a relic of fossil-fuel culture.
