Because capitalism incorporates more and more of their lives in the production of economic value. That isn't the same thing as prosperity. If economic value isn't distributed to the working classes, there's more work without prosperity.
Look at South Korea, where people work hard in order to cover basic essentials like housing. Maybe according to the WEF or Economist that's "prosperity" and a "higher standard of living", but it's an obvious scam to anyone who isn't thoroughly brainwashed by capitalism
