Exactly. An alphanumeric encoding for integers.



An argument could be made for calling it “compression of the string encoding”. Since HTTP is string oriented, that makes some sense as an optimization of sorts, perhaps.


It doesn't seem compressed, in fact the output of this is less compressible than the input. It's made for human interface.
