Unprecedented Microsoft leak reveals plans for new Xbox systems (axios.com)

“Microsoft's next console after the Xbox Series X and S would represent not just a new device but a new "ecosystem generation,"…”

“According to the presentation, Microsoft had already selected ARM64 architecture for the core device's CPU. The company expected to deliver development kits to game creators by 2027, ahead of a 2028 launch.”

Wait what?

I thought that ARM64 was an option, not a done deal.

Project Volterra - it seems they will do two systems and do a shootout - they will probably decide based on costs - they will sell a whole lot more consoles to Joe Everybody and kill PS6 if they can bring costs down to an impulse buy of $299.

The GPU and IO speeds are far and away the most important factors for what people have used consoles for, for 20 years. ARM64 is perfectly capable as a CPU (just ask my MacBook Pro). Pair it with a very capable GPU and you'd likely have a winner.

Nearly every ARM system (including the Macs) today have cellphone-tier GPUs paired with them. I'd love to see what a system paired with something akin to GeForce 4080 (reasonable for a 2027 system) could do, power-efficiency and 4k-target wise.

Now imagine this scenario however unlikely - Microsoft licenses a bespoke CPU only design from Apple derived from the M3 coupled with an AMD Navi GPU for their console.

Apple get a new revenue stream and, tech bragging rights in a market, where it will never compete.

Call me crazy, but I was expecting a Nintendo Switch / Steam Deck form factor.

Yet another xbox sized awkwardly for the tv stand it seems

Hilariously you can't even place it on its side this time. At least with the original Series X that was possible.

Or maybe they'll make a horizontal stand for it?

I was hoping that the shape had something to do with quiet efficient cooling, but wasn't mentioned at all.

Very unlikely this is the final form factor.
