More like spammers were allowed to ruin Usenet so that a few companies like Uunet and EarthLink could make a little more money, then, when Usenet collapsed, spammers were allowed to ruin email so a few companies or people could make a little money before email was rendered useless.
I'm mostly on-board with your post but email is still pretty useful... as long as you're a good consumer and use one of the Blessed Email Servers. If you try to run your own, well, you'll have to deal with Google and their running dogs at Spamhaus
