Recommendation algorithms are absolutely not what is meant by "AI" in the current lay understanding.

You can still have very problematic recommendation systems that do not contain a single neuron.

It doesn’t matter what is meant by AI, it is AI behind the scenes.

The way this AI was deployed has definitely done some nice damage to democracy and society thus far.
