He wants to support the open decentralized internet but then his first donation next week will be to signal...

Give money to Matrix, Mastodon, PeerTube and other actual open source projects that need support.


Kind of baffling. Why? Is it because:

- From the perspective of the very top of centralized social media, "all the other players" look like niche, "decentralized" in the sense of many small companies, small fries--regardless of how decentralized their tech actually is?

- Because Signal is a alternative already in the fold so to speak (promoted/accepted 'alternative')?

- Because Signal is not quite a household name but and makes for better...PR?

- Because he thinks Signal is positioned to do something useful with it?

Seriously, Jack comes off as seems super genuine, all considered--is that naive or correct? Am I missing something obvious? I'm asking because in a technical sense, the mismatch is an interesting and astute observation.
