The languages couldn't be more different, and the complex semantics of Python makes for lots of pitfalls for the unwary novice to fall into, even in foundational language features where BASIC-like languages are generally quite simple and transparent.

The syntax is more Ruby/Lua like but with the improvements that Python is making in typing, it looks like it could get there in three minor releases.
