Ask HN: Is your company giving you a holiday for Juneteenth?

Taking a casual survey to see which companies are giving their employees time off for Juneteenth, acknowledging it, or not mentioning it

If folks are open to it, name your company and whether they're doing any of the above

Yes - They also stopped acknowledging Father's Day.

Huh, I’ve never been at a company that did anything for Father’s Day - probably because it’s on a Sunday. What did your company do previously?

Just acknowledged it through email and well wishes from leadership. As they do Mother’s Day.

I've never had or heard of a company giving people time off on father's or mother's day.

I work remotely for an american company from outside the us and have no idea what juneteenth even is.

It commemorates emancipation for slaves in the US, and I would say most people didn't know about it until last year or so.

President Biden made it a federal holiday last year.

I work in manufacturing and I haven’t met many companies that are taking it off. I had hoped it would immediately be a paid holiday for most folks, but I think it’s going to take a few years to get to that point.

What does it being a federal holiday entail in the US?

Here it would mean a paid day off but based on your comment that's not the case.

Federal employees get a paid holiday, banks and financial institutions are closed, federal government offices and post offices are closed.

Private companies and state and local governments can make their own choices about whether to be open / closed / allow days off. I live in the south in about a 50% black area and most of our businesses are either closed or giving the people the option to take it off -- many did this even before Biden's declaration.

Also many companies give X paid holidays per year, then allow you to choose which ones you use them for to an extent. I usually work Christmas so I get two paid ones I use for a regional holiday plus an extra floating day off.

So, what Whole Foods did was not recognize any Federal Holidays. They give you a number of paid holidays you can take off each year, plus a certain amount of PTO for you to use as you like (which includes sick leave), and that's about it.

The idea is that they are a commercial company supporting 500+ stores around the country, and those days tend to be their busiest. So, corporate shouldn't be getting days off when the people on the ground running the stores don't get the day off.

Why do we need it to be a paid holiday for people? Lots of government holidays aren't.

It's a banking holiday. I have the day off and so does nearly everyone I know who works a white collar job.

At the software company I work at, there was some acknowledgement for it, but for the most part it's been completely overshadowed by Pride month.

Yes we have it off. NYC-headquarted company with office in SF.

If you need to convince management, the federal government recognized it as a holiday in 2021.

Big Tech firm - acknowledged it with a day of learning but no day off, which is not fun especially for parents whose kids' schools do close on Monday

In the spirit of the Juneteenth last Sunday, as a first generation Chinese immigrant from Mainland China, with firsthand experience and struggle with group identity and victimhood in both China and North America, I would like to share this great movie, "Uncle Tom", to remind us of what makes America America.

It gets mentioned and acknowledged, but it isn't a company holiday, though I'm allowed to take paid time off.

> though I'm allowed to take paid time off.

Does this mean it’s an optional day off ?

No, it means I have a ready-made excuse to take a day off. =^.^=

Why is this question asked? Any context?

Not OP but there's a cultural shift in the last couple years to acknowledge (let alone know about) this holiday.

Juneteenth is now an official national holiday, so it’s not just a cultural shift, it’s recognized by law.

We have holidays that commemorate the birth and death of mythical gods. This holiday has merit. Try to remember the fact that we don’t have slavery anymore, and it’s a human right to NOT be one. It could’ve been you next.

As I posted here, take a peek at their past comments, they’re an outright neo-nazi Holocaust denier, and they seem to see Hitler as a hero: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=31791070

Not surprising a racist disagrees with celebrating the emancipation of African American slaves.

> mythical gods

And? Myths are what shape culture and thinking of people. They are important.

The fact that people who happened to have a certain color of skin did something to people of a certain color has no meaning to people of a completely different time when those things are not even remotely relevant.

The only reason I can think why this exists is because someone decided to exploit people of today based on skin color.

That they aren't held in slavery anymore -- similar to Passover.

Try-hard edgy energy here. Just enjoy the day off dude.

Your comment seems to carry a tone of dismissal, may I ask why?

Clicked their previous comments - they’re a neo-nazi Holocaust denier. For example, they posted this 5 days ago: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=31722179

> Hitler is recognized and admired by many. If the change in world order happens when his significance is still fresh, he will surface back as a universally admired figure because it is not very difficult to piece together what the Nazi regime actually did vs what the Soviet occupiers accused them of (and what the US went along with).

And then they continue with pure insane Holocaust denial: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=31728678

> The second world war was a biological war with typhus as the primary weapon. All of "holocaust" was Germany trying to quarantine and treat the infection... which is why SS doctors were at the frontline of it all. They still lost millions of people. The most affected were low hyegine communities who did not listen to government recommendations... but the 6 million number is downright retarded if you look at the population records.

Why do neo-nazis exist? I don’t know, but this person clearly is one. Obviously racists are not going to agree with Juneteenth.

> they’re a neo-nazi Holocaust denier.

I'll take Holocaust denier but don't you have to be white to be a neo-Nazi?

> Why do neo-nazis exist?

I've heard this term has been used to describe anti-immigrant people... and then there is Azov and groups like that. If I were to use your language, I'm a non-white immigrant to a majority white country. Why would I be a neo-Nazi?

> Obviously racists are not going to agree with Juneteenth.

I believe that anyone who thinks race exists is a racist... so this means the entire American system and from what I see. There is no such thing as race, biologically or genetically speaking... and even if it did, it would have no relation to the race used by American racists who seem to use skin colors (black, white, brown, yellow etc.) to determine race... and from the outside, it seems to it is used in the US for keeping tension between people who look different because of their genetic heritage so that they can be kept afraid and loyal to political parties.

IMO if you’re a Holocaust denier who idolizes Hitler then yeah, you’re a neo-Nazi.

The Holocaust happened. My grandfather was an Auschwitz survivor, the only survivor of his family - the Nazis murdered his parents, brothers and sisters. He saw unspeakable cruelty in Auschwitz, watched the Nazis casually and systematically starve, abuse and mass murder countless Jews. When the Red Army liberated them, he and the other survivors were so emaciated that the Soviet soldiers broke down crying just seeing them. You saying essentially “there was no Holocaust, the dirty Jews were dying of typhus and the SS tried to save them” is an absolutely insane, racist conspiracy theory flying in the face of all evidence. Things aren’t true just because your twisted, anti-Semitic mind believes them to be.

> the Nazis murdered his parents, brothers and sisters

And a magic unicorn told me that they died because of typhus used as a biological weapon by the Union forces while Germany tried their best to save them.

So basically Germany lost WW2 because they were devoting too many resources to saving sick Jews & Romany, trying their best as they were. I doubt that you believe such nonsense, but if you do it's a testament to the power of self-deceit.

No, they lost the war because a bigger independent Europe would be difficult to exploit by the US and the Soviet Union so they were attacked with everything to prevent that... and that included a biological weapon i.e. typhus. The Germans did what they thought they should to contain the disease... and as the economy collapsed, the quarantine centers did not receive adequate supplies.
