The symbols are just decorative; it’s not being parsed by anything so there’s no reason for it to be any kind of valid syntax

So writing markup but not actually converting it to look hip? I don't understand the point.

This is how people used to write plain text documents. It’s a stylistic choice. It looks like Markdown because Markdown was deliberately designed to result in documents that look like this style.

In other words, you have cause and effect backwards. This doesn’t look like Markdown; Markdown looks like this.

Have you ever seen documentation from seventies? Are you familiar with Usenet? I think jdlshore point needs to be reiterated: markdown follows older stylistic conventions. That article is written like typewriter produced document (except few details, like image on top and so on).

Same with emoticons vs emojis: those "textual representations" of emojis, like ":-)" predate emojis.

You don’t have to like the aesthetic, but there's no need to disparage it either. I think it looks nice.

I'm sorry. My comment was meant as constructive feedback, but I probably came across as an asshole. I do like the blog and the content which are the most important components. I just wish that the content was actually rendered semi-normally. If you think it looks cool, that is all that matters really.

That’s cool, but writing a coding blog with fake markup might confuse people. This is feedback. Not insults.

My intent is to make it look "straight outta emacs". If I didn't adjust the colors to have way more contrast, it does have the same color scheme as I use in emacs.

Honestly I love your blog and the motif. I find it clever and visually interesting. More feedback

it's not markup, it's ascii art. works well, looks fine to me.
