Ask NATO to close the airspace over Ukraine (openpetition.eu)

NATO doesn't decide what NATO does. The US decides what NATO does. The US will not close the airspace over Ukraine because then they'd be at war with Russia. The US will be physically endangered by Russian nukes at home. No way.

> NATO doesn’t decide what NATO does.

Yes, it does; NATO works by consensus, not central dictatorship, or even majority vote.

> The US will not close the airspace over Ukraine because then they’d be at war with Russia.

That’s why…pretty much every nation in NATO would oppose a NATO-enforced NFZ, not uniquely the US.

I think that's naive. In refuting European countries claim to not have been consulted on the Afghanistan withdrawal, for example: Stoltenberg is quoted as saying, “Of course the United States consulted with European allies, but at the end of the day, every nation has to make their own decision on deploying forces.”

Doesn't sound like "concensus" to me. Without the US, NATO would be a paper tiger.

What happens at the point of enforcement? Is NATO going to shoot down Russian planes? That would pull NATO into a war, which is what we want to stop to begin with

I’m glad the world is coming together to put pressure on Russia. Though am I the only one that feels like Putin is just itching to use a nuclear weapon? Every additional sanction I wonder if it will be the straw that breaks the camel’s back.

It’s literally the push of a button to have a salvo of SLBMs put a dent in every major city on the continent of their choosing.

That's why many places in Europe also have nuclear weapons. They are a deterrent. I highly doubt Russia would nuke any territory they are trying to take over such as Ukraine. Other places it's possible, but the response would be equally destructive too. It's a no-win situation.

Yes that is rational, but Putin is not acting rational. If the world backs him into a corner he might do something rash. He’s isolated, paranoid, and has a big red button in front of him.
