The Hamas government succeeded in retaining control in Gaza, but failed in the West Bank. In essence, there was a successful coup in the West Bank. Fatah is not the legitimate representative of the Palestinian people.
Does Aljazeera disagree with this account? All the contemporary accounts in the Western media at the time agreed on this. Even Wikipedia seems to agree, in its weasely way.
