I've never actually heard of that to be honest! But I'm in Melbourne, where winters are fairly mild. All I do is give them a good prune.

Ah fair enough. In regions where it gets cold enough to damage the wood in the winter people wrap them.
It’s pretty common in Brooklyn NYC to see fig trees wrapped in tar paper.
