I just now bought her book. That’s my reading for the next week. In her interviews she comes off as a thoughtful person. I’m generally surprised by the strong resistance to the lab leak theory in the American media.

The 2007 outbreak of foot and mouth disease in the UK was caused by an actual leak of infected fluid out of a lab in Surrey.

When the "battle of Covid disinformation" raged in the media, I often noticed that the factcheckers had a tendency to say that no human epidemic was ever provably linked to a lab leak.

While true, it was a bit misleading, precisely because of this non-human, but still very economically and societally important disease outbreak which happened in a very developed country and quite recently.

I do not really understand why so many people, including some who have no conflict of interest (unlike Peter Daszak!), tend to regard Wuhan lab leak as a dirty, stupid conspiracy theory. Shit happens all the time, no precautions are perfect. If Fukushima, Chernobyl or Challenger happened, a leak of a virus from a lab can happen as well.

Not so. A human flu pandemic occurred in 1977 due to leak of H1N1 from a lab along the Russo-Chinese border: https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.independent.co.uk/news/scie...

Thanks for sharing the Wikipedia link. I had no idea about this incident!

I totally agree that shit happens all the time. That’s the default, the null hypothesis for any system where humans are involved.

Is this a credible source? I find it hard to believe that NYT was sold for $50k.

I liked Jon Stewart's take on the Wuhan Lab Theory https://yewtu.be/watch?v=sSfejgwbDQ8 watching that always cracks me up

Ridley, the co-author is quite good in this interview about it all https://youtu.be/xdRksNG4uvU

I'm glad people are trying to get some clarity on what went on.
