New Android Market for Phones (android-developers.blogspot.com)

This is fairly huge. Embedded movie rentals (with offline downloading), book purchases, etc. This is a significant feature launch seemingly without a lot of fanfare. Perhaps I missed the early hype on this?

I hope for once 'select countries' means Canada. Please please, we want to be equal mobile web citizens!

The movie rentals were announced at IO, the book purchases were already there (just not Market integrated), and the redesign was shown off as well (though not at the keynote). The new stuff is more of a feature sync with 3.1 than anything else.

The tiles remind me of WP7, I'll bet handset manufacturers have to shell out an additional $5 now

Everything about it reminds me of Windows Phone 7.

Maybe this will be included with the money Microsoft makes with every android device.

Unfortunately the video app doesn't work with my phone. Google Nexus S. Kinda crazy since this is Google's flagship phone.

Strange but not unexpected. Google Music doesn't work with my phone however it does attempt to replace the stock Music app by adding a second app called the exact same thing and anytime I try to play a music file it tries to load the Google Music app that doesn't work. http://i.imgur.com/B9zb1.jpg

(and no I can't check that box to choose the default action. It doesn't work)

This is the type of stuff Google really has to sort out. It's getting ridiculous.

Last I checked the Video app only worked for the Xoom and has not yet started rolling out for any other device. Expect it to support the Nexus S once the new Market starts rolling out.

Update: Just installed it on my Nexus S.

Perhaps a new Nexus model is in the works?

Shouldn't the default assumption be that there's always a new nexus model in the works?

Android Movies doesn't work with rooted phones for DRM reasons.

What's the video app?

how about a flexible search/filter/sort that doesn't suck balls?

how the hell does google fail at making a useful market search for so long. >:(

Agreed, Appbrain has a flexible search for a long time now. It is still much better than the Market.

appbrain is actually pretty relevant on alot of their results. +1

how do you know, do you have access to it yet ? Currently in its current implementation it matches the ios app store client. I actually think the client on android is better than the iphone appstore. Comparing the website vs itunes app store is a different argument.

the search algorithm in the android market is horrible. its been broken for almost two weeks now. when trying to find an app, alot of the results are returning unrelated results.

doing exact searches of apps which should show up first right now is a huge FAIL

for other developers on here....is the market search screwing up big time for your apps too?

it seems like search algorithm is broken and returning horrible spammy results or low quality apps when searching for exact name of a specific app.

This is a big step to improving Android in general.
