I think there's a lot of potential for tools like this that live on either side of the spreadsheet, i.e. that build on top of spreadsheets to provide more functionality, or that create more powerful ways of creating spreadsheets like the tool described in the article. For example GRID(https://grid.is) also works with existing spreadsheet software instead of asking people to learn a new tool in order to become more productive. It is essentially a presentation layer on top of spreadsheets, allowing the user to create custom web apps by using a proprietary, browser-based spreadsheet engine to run all of the spreadsheet computation on the fly.
