Why do color TVs make black and white snow?
They even shimmed in closed caption data and widescreen signalling to that same signal they've been using since the 40s. It's honestly beautiful.

Not to mention timecode, Macrovision, and a slew of other proprietary information was stored in the vertical blanking part of the signal. I really miss the hackable nature of analog signals.
