The article alludes to education, but doesn't connect any dots. I'm not sure where "well-off" is coming from, though.


If you are paycheck to paycheck, the immediacy of needing work can drive you to do something else. Then it just gets harder and harder to get back into the industry.


That's almost certainly a valid point. I just don't believe the article really addressed it, so it's an inaccurate summary above.
