I try and get the best computer money can buy, because the quality of life is better on better hardware, I can always configure software-based restrictions if I need to create performant software (network throttling, cgroups, etc.), and because there's things you can do with new hardware you can't reasonably do with old (like training ml models). It keeps your options open.
