I always felt that Kurzweil’s timelines were too optimistic not only because technology may not evolve so fast, but also because it fails to account for the delays that government regulation imposes. So many of the vaunted leaps in medical technology, for example, are going to require years and years of testing before they get approval for use. Other whizbang technology of the future might be prohibited from the consumer market because governments see it as too dangerous.
This may be the case for many technologies, but clear wins that save lives get fast tracked. It just happened to CTX001. Also older researchers are doing self testing all the time, as they know that they don't have the time to go through regulations.
