I suspect it's named after Zirconium [1], similar to how Chromium/Chrome are also named after a metal.

Other pieces of the system are called Garnet and Topaz, so I assume Zircon is more about the gemstone.

Surely Google should realise that Topaz and Garnet clash with font names on AmigaOS?

I'd guess though it has to do with circles as in ring-0 from OS theory and maybe recycled (pun not intended) from google plus circles. With the other ones creativity might just have left them.
Garnet is the composer for ui. What is topaz?
