I believe there is a subset of gamers who spend this kind of money for cultural reasons. But I build expensive beasts once and drive them until they run into the ground. My dual 690s handled "everything I could throw at them"[0] for years and years. I only just upgraded to dual 1080 FTW editions (also very expensive) and expect to run those for quite a few years as well.[1]

[0] Caveat: I only ever run a single monitor on my gaming rigs. [1] Turns out I get VR sickness something fierce, so VR won't really be a driving need for me.
