There is a theory which states that if we did adopt one rendering engine to rule them all, the healthy competition that keeps (most of) the various rendering engines innovating would collapse and progress would stall.

Eventually, some upstart would seize the opportunity by launching a new browser with a better rendering engine.

There is another theory which states that this has already happened.
