I would like to move to San Francisco because of the tech ecosystem and the interesting environment. However, for personal reasons, the next few years are really my only window of opportunity in life to be there; after that I will only be able to visit (as opposed to live there).
What would be the quickest way to get hired in SF? I'm currently on the east coast and just finished a PhD in the computational sciences. I think most of the resumes I send out are not making it past HR, because I seem to have no trouble getting east coast interviews (I imagine west coast companies would rather not pay for relocation when they can get a Stanford or Berkeley grad nearby). For the few companies where I do get past HR screening, I seem to perform well on phone and in-person interviews and have had a few offers, although none yet in SF.
Does anyone have advice on how to get past the "HR barrier" and get my resumes seen by engineers? Thank you.
