It took 6 paragraphs to get to the word JavaScript. JavaScript is here to stay and its adoption for server apps is on the rise and will be used in some cases where yesterday ruby or python would have been used. That's it in a nutshell. No sense in trying to tack on superlatives like "most important".

JavaScript is here to stay because Netscape threw it in the browser and somehow the browser wars didn't screw it up enough to make it problematic as cross-browser html & css. So its the only game in town for web browsers and once you get used to its warts, it does the job.
