Which problems did you run into? I use Prosody as the server (which is brain-dead simple to set up) and Conversations as the client on my friends' Android phones. We just add each others as buddies and set "OTR only" with two taps, and these problems are solved forever.

I do agree though that the user experience for my OTR-enabled messengers is shit (especially the "first message not encrypted" problem).
