I have had that conversation with developers, where I literally was pointing them at the Wikipedia article and quoting bits back at them. Fun times.

This is all too true. I had people in my 300 level Networking who even after that class didn't know how DNS servers worked (at a high level).

There are definitely less skilled developers around, but in my experience they also don't read (or even write) on HN.
