There is a good made-for-TV movie starring a young Tom Hanks, called "Mazes and Monsters" (1982) that was probably made because of the hype:

Looks like you can watch it here:

Yeah, I enjoyed the hell out of Mazes & Monsters — ironically, of course — but there is no conceivable way I can get behind calling it "good".

The religious thing didn't make a dent in my parents but when this crappy movie came on TV it was nearly the end of D&D for us.

Leonard Maltin rated it "Above Average" (which is his highest rating for a TV Movie) and says it is "an engrossing suspenser."

I'm no Tom Hanks fan, but he held that mess together and made an amazingly terrible idea only mildly hilarious.

I was in the gaming club in HS in 1979 to 1982, and we basically played military strategy games and D&D. The Tom Hanks movie still resonates, because I remember thinking I didn't know anybody like the characters in our club. My parents only wanted me to balance it with 'real life', getting out and breathing some fresh air (in Brooklyn ;)

This is indeed mentioned in the article.
