In that light, read the statement of Brzezinski (the President's National Security Advisor at that time) regarding the US support of Islamism in Afghanistan since 1979 (the same year the Islamic revolution happened in neighboring Iran):

"Q: And neither do you regret having supported the Islamic [integrisme], having given arms and advice to future terrorists?

Brzezinski: What is most important to the history of the world? The Taliban or the collapse of the Soviet empire? Some stirred-up Moslems or the liberation of Central Europe and the end of the cold war?"

Quite consistent.




Brzezinski was right. Statesmanship is about tradeoffs and prioritiztion. This was a great bargain.
