I don't know what xdg is. Can you provide a link? Is it a better technical solution than what editorconfig has set out to do?

I think that you were just being snarky, but if there is a competing standard that is actually something I'd like to hear about.

http://standards.freedesktop.org/basedir-spec/basedir-spec-l... It lets users specify their config directory.

But since no one does that, the result is that everyone has half of their config files in $HOME, and the other half in $HOME/.config.
