Agreed - nothing more annoying than a product that wants my credentials before I can even try it out, see a screenshot, or anything else that might make me want it. le sigh

Not only that but it also requires email activation. At least some sites that ask to register allow you to login without activating for a little bit.

Impressive. Sad to know that many promising projects fly under the radar. The Changelog featured Stringer and that probably helped putting it over 1000 Favorites, but this project easily comes out on top, yet isn't well known.

"Facebook has been the gateway drug to the internet." I have never thought of it put that way, but it is such a true and insightful statement. When I began high school, almost none of my adult family members were on the internet (less one aunt who did a lot of internet shopping). Here I am closing in on my graduation from college and my entire family has adopted the internet -- grandparents of both sides, my father, aunts & uncles, etc. -- and in every case their first experience was making a facebook account.

Can anyone shed any light on how Japan seems to be doing so well in this metric when all of the other countries that they are close to geographically and culturally are doing very poorly?

I believe a lot of this is due to the US occupation of Japan after WWII which turned Japan in a democracy and gave it laws modeled after the American New Deal. More info here:

Japan may be geographically close to lots of places, but culturally, they're not close to anywhere.

That's a very good point. I made that statement out of my perceived, and very naive, "closeness" to other cultures.

Read up on Japanese history and come to your own conclusions. It is a unique country unlike any other in the world.

Am I the only one who initially read this as "Don't Eat Fortune Cookies," and didn't realize my mistake until going back to read the rest of the title?
