As outlined elsewhere he's an "activist." He talks a lot but he's not a coder.

Having had several technical discussions with Jacob, I’m certain he’s technically skilled.

(I’m a former Google engineer, have worked on privacy and security software [I created Disconnect, have contributed to HTTPS Everywhere].)

I will second the statement that Jacob is an able and skilled developer.

I have worked with him on projects long ago, however, so he can certainly have chosen where to focus his time and attention. Just because you don't see him code, don't assume he can't (replying to Grandparent of course)

Are you meaning to imply that "activists" cannot or do not do anything productive? If so, you might want to reevaluate that belief.

You sound an awful lot like a developer that doesn't think they need a project manager and is oblivious to the chaos that surrounds them.

I guess they found out liberal economical policies lead to unemployment, and the poor loathe unemployment.

By the way Corbyn is a very bad example. He's a walking train wreck.

Your comment about Corbyn is essentially tautology - he's unelectable because he's unelectable. Why? Why don't the working class want a leader who's promising to end policies which continue to hit the working class the hardest?

And why do the poor loathe unemployment? Why don't they loathe being poor more than being unemployed? Working minimum wage on zero-hour contracts means they're still poor.

He's so unelectable he was elected leader of the opposition.

Source for liberal policies leading to unemployment?

The Venn diagram of the AltRight and 4chan's /pol/ board (the only board that would care about ((()))) is a circle inside of a circle so I don't think it will make any difference.

A () inside of a () inside of a ()?

You mean ((()))?

Secret? I don't think it's secret anymore. I follow lots of white nationalists and I have seen it for months already. This one was particularly funny, although I don't know if it's fake or not. https://i.imgur.com/A6aJYs7.png

What's also funny is how the article insists on ((())) being designed and engineered by evil masterminds to be unsearchable, when it's just incidental.

>What's also funny is how the article insists on ((())) being designed and engineered by evil masterminds to be unsearchable

From the article:

>Whether they know it or not, Neo-Nazis on Twitter have discovered a brilliant loophole — a code that's difficult to filter

Typical white nationalist, not bothering with the details.

I... don't really see why what you attached is funny? Not because of the offensive topic but just because... there's no humour there?

Because he's a white nationalist and he admitted down below and he's proud of it.

> I follow lots of white nationalists

Why?

I like that he deleted his comment that said "I am a white nationalist".

I did, because people here can get pretty salty and I didn't want to "bite the bait", but yes, now that you insist, I am one, and I am not ashamed of it.

"people here can get pretty salty when I admit I am a white nationalist" is probably the most positive thing I've heard anyone say about HN in years.

I call it the San Francisco bubble. Fortunately, it's just a bubble. ;P

Weird, I call it "the civilised world bubble".

But yeah, I know, silent majority and all that, right? There are dozens of you. Dozens!

I'm not in San Francisco, not in California, not part of the startup scene, and I'm white, but yet I am proud to be part of that "bubble". But I agree with untog, it's the civilized world bubble. It's the white nationalists that are part of a (shrinking) bubble.

TL;DR: The country is not with you, unlinker. Even the whites aren't with you.

So, this is one of the things that's so disturbing about Trump's rise. It is causing people with repugnant, undemocratic, ideals to feel empowered to be much more open about their beliefs, and more likely to take public action in support of them.

There's always been an attempt to normalize hate speech as mere difference of opinion, but now that a popular national politician has tacitly endorsed the extremist arm of the American right, things are getting frightening.

Reasonable Republicans and conservatives, of which there are many in tech, should be particularly concerned about this shift.

Why are you a white nationalist? Do you think badly of people who aren't white or that such people should be treated differently? If so why?

I'm neither white nor a white nationalist, but the way I understand it is that white nationalism seeks to preserve an arbitrary trait known as "whiteness".

In other words, they feel that the white "race" as a whole is being genocided because of race mixing. Some feel that there is an international conspiracy of Jews orchestrating this white genocide. If you try to disagree with them, they will reply that you are either a shill or "JIDF" which stands for "Jewish Internet Defense Force". It's not a very homogenous group though, so I try not to generalize them and keep an open mind. Empirically, I will say that there are studies showing working class (blue collar) white youths are worse off economically than black youths, which could explain the rise of this political philosophy.

As I understand it it's not even purely race mixing that's a problem but race replacing. I wish every white nationalist would get their DNA sampled so they can see how pure they really are, even just among white people! But anyway broadly-white-peoples are breeding below replacement rates while broadly-(Africans|Mexicans|Arab|Turkish) ethnic groups are not. As a refugee/immigrant to Germany laid it out at some protest, Germany will become a majority-Muslim ethnically-Arab country within some number of decades just from sheer population growth of one group over the other, and what will remain will not be Germany even if it still calls itself such. A white nationalist then is just a person who doesn't want this to happen to their white country. Of course there are the more insane white nationalists who see Jews everywhere and so on, but nationalism is a spectrum you know? Japan for instance remains pretty xenophobic but they can maintain that without also being outright hostile towards Chinese, so the hostility towards Chinese has been going down.

If this was 1916 instead of 2016 I think the basic white nationalists would have a stronger case. This isn't a CURRENT_YEAR remark, but just a remark that timescales involving even 40+ years are ridiculously difficult to predict right now because technology overwhelms classic human nature, so when the impact of these things won't be felt for that far off in the classic human history case of technology remaining the same it's not very fruitful to dwell on it in the current reality of technology changing rapidly. That isn't to say they don't have any case at all but a lot of it is too little too late. They want to move to be more like Japan when they should really be satisfied with something more like Singapore. Not importing millions of foreigners permanently would also not be a bad idea but again, a bit too little too late.

What type of white? Slavic is different from Anglo-Saxon is different from Germanic is etc., not too long ago all the various white groups in American had their own gangs and gang wars because "white" as a broad term wasn't good enough. Do you think that because of the threats of Mexican-Americans and African-Americans (do you also have any issues with the over-representation of Asians of various types in tech?) it now makes sense to band "broadly European" peoples together in reaction, or is it something else?

News to me. I suppose we live in different bubbles.

http://blog.jospoortvliet.com/2016/06/nextcloud-is-replacing...

>'why' is the question everybody has and I hope you understand I don't want to talk too much about that

Grow up, maybe, Jos?

This sounds to me like the usual and continuous splits inside OSS communities, but Jesus, I do miss the days when you had a detailed explanation as soon as somebody leaked the IRC logs!

You don't talk negative about other people, especially if you worked with them for a long time, and especially when it's not a matter of "they hid bodies of people they killed" but mere differences in opinion about how to do business. So no, this dirty laundry should not be aired in public.

On the other hand, that specific thing is the entire reason for the fork existing, its drive and motivation.

It could be anything. "We feel own-cloud isn't libre enough", "We don't feel this direction is profitable", "We feel owncloud was too open", "I personally disliked one of the people there any wanted to sink the ship", etc etc (note: I am being a bit tongue in cheek here)

If its a reason I agree with, then migration makes sense, if its a reason I don't agree with, then obviously migration might not be a good idea. But no one knows what the driving motivation of nextcloud is! So its a bit more worry-causing then reassuring

He's addressed it and said he doesn't want to talk about it.

I don't think it's Jos who needs to grow up. If you want to watch trainwrecks go read the celeb gossip mags.

If it is an open source Project developed in the open, I believe we deserve to know why.

This guy published an app that did jailbreak detection and some other stuff on the App Store, it was taken down, and has been rambling since then in a very very childish way about stuff like this: https://twitter.com/i0n1c/status/738286205708738560

Truth is--he knew what was going to happen, so this looks just like another excuse to rant.

He is known in the jailbreak scene as someone who cannot stay serious - he's always involved in some kind of drama.

If I recall correctly, the pangu dev team attended some of his sessions about iOS hacking and used this knowledge to create a publicly available jailbreak tool. He then started to rant about how they "stole" his technologies on twitter (see for example https://twitter.com/i0n1c/status/481020166483238912).

More about his childish public behavior related to the jailbreak scene can be read here: http://www.iclarified.com/41983/pangu-jailbreak-stops-using-...

The problem at the time was that they had used his bug that he gave away only for training purposes to the people attending his class.

After the first release, pangu replaced his bug by one of theirs (and both bugs were fixed by apple in a subsequent iOS release.) He probably had to spend some time finding a new bug to use in his classes so it's understandable to be pissed.

How do you own a bug? Was the bug something in iOS? Wouldn't that be Apple's bug?

A sibling post said they took his code. That's a fair complaint, was it clear when they saw it that it was not code that they could reuse?

Actually, I believe that's the next (or current) big debate in software due to privacy/search warrants/recent FBI vs Apple iPhone unlock debacle.

Yep, i followed him on twitter for a few months, he's constantly trolling/behaving childish.

I can't see how you could possibly describe his behavior as "childish" here. Pangu straight up stole his code and sold it.

Yeah, I remember this. He's always taunting people about having jailbreaks and not sharing them.

Truth is your comment is ad hominem. ;)

Can't you open a Python shell and unpickle it?

Gave me an error the last time I tried to that.

Plus even if it did work, it involves logging into the server, activating my python virtualenv, pulling the data out via the python / Django shell an unpickling and printing it. As opposed to running a query on my local machine connecting to the database. When you are debugging a problem and just want to get an overview of what is happening, that is a hell of a lot of hassle.

Of course, you don't take for granted what the client says. You generate your own file name.

I guess they simply won't. Apps that don't adapt can't open the file. Period.

Given how drastically Microsoft changed in the last couple years, I wouldn't be surprised if they distanced themselves from the level of compatibility guarantees they issued in the past.

EDIT: I don't think it would go down well, if some files cannot be opened in all applications only because of the path. I mean, Windows is the biggest enviroment for the most diverse set of desktop applications right now, so refusing to open files because your app doesn't support the path sounds unreasonable but I cannot think of a solution myself. Thus I'd like to know how they're approaching this.

I'd say they will not enable that policy by default, at least for a very long time.

Again, arbitrary
