A note for Kobo users: a lot of us (myself included) use Calibre to manage and upload our ebooks. Something about Calibre messes up Kepub files and strips out a lot of the formatting (including the book’s cover).

If I want to appreciate a nice Kepub from Standard Ebooks, I upload it directly to the Kobo.

I contacted support in 2021 as well, trying to regain access to my account made in 2010. They told me that they wouldn’t help me.

Same. They asked for proof that I bought it, I sent the PayPal transaction ID and then they went like "lol we don't actually have any records from back then."

I made a hacked version of the old launcher after that and now a couple friends and colleagues and I run a custom server and play on that occasionally.

RNAV RNP approaches can contain curved descents. They’re usually used in areas with high terrain but I don’t see why they couldn’t be used down here. LPV minimums seem to usually be very close to ILS minimums these days.

That said, it’s always nice to have a ground-based alternative approach. I wonder if they have sustained issues with GPS this far south.

Grew up in ND/MT. In my experience the ranchers would use a tractor to move the carcass somewhere deserted, and then let the coyotes do the final clean-up.

You guys have a great product, I fly for a major airline and really like it. Hurry up and get Delta onboard so we can get their data too: I’ve used their in-house app at my old job and Sky Vector is much better.

Any plans to change the Jepp integration? Most of my colleagues don’t use it, too much data displayed at once. I’m not sure of a solution but would love to hear if you guys have any ideas.

Thank you. We are actively working to onboard as many airlines as possible, and partnering with Delta would be highly beneficial. The more data we have, the safer and more efficient flights become.

Regarding the integration with Jeppesen, we would greatly appreciate hearing more about any issues you encounter and receiving your feedback

I’m not sure I have any suggestions on how to fix it, but the Skypath integration with the moving map in Jepp FD Pro is way too cluttered. There’s already quite a bit of information in Jepp and the bright colors from Skypath really wash out all the other information. I haven’t seen many pilots use it more than once.

Thx for taking the time to write. We will look into it.

Sounds quite a bit like wake turbulence. As planes move through the air, they leave air vortices called “wake” (much like a boat does in water). This effect is worse when airplanes are slow, like when they’re coming into land. Pilots try to avoid each other’s wake, but it’s invisible and sometimes you do hit it if the controller vectors you close behind another aircraft.

It produces a strong rolling motion and can even flip small airplanes.

True, but professional pilots from all countries are expected to be fluent in Aviation English. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aviation_English

Yes, but in a high-stress environment, your ability to process words--especially those not in your native language--goes down the tubes quickly. Even if you were to tune out sounds to the same degree that you tune out words, at least the sounds would still have a relatively universal meaning, e.g. loud klaxon for big problem, soft chime for minor notification.

As recently as 10 months ago, my brother did a boot camp with no prior experience and landed a job as a junior dev with a ~$100k package. His class had a placement rate of maybe 2 in 3.

Seems like the job market has only gotten worse since then however.

which bootcamp was this?

He ended up choosing Tech Elevator based on placement rate, online reviews, and location.

Thanks. There are so many out there that I have no idea of what to recommend to friends that ask.

I didn’t go through it myself, but for him placement rate was the #1 thing he made his decision on. TE was about 75% coding and 25% interview skills from what I was told. He liked it and was successful.

It really does sound like now is a historically bad time to try breaking into coding, sadly.

He managed to get placed tho. Now's a bad time, given the layoffs putting very senior folk on the market at competitive rates but unfortunately, I don't know of other careers paths with that same kind of opportunity that can also be done remotely. Healthcare is usually onsite. If there's something solid that's not coding that it's a good time to break into for, I'm all ears!

We just spent a week in Japan and did not stay only in tourist areas, my Apple Watch logged our walks as around 10-15 miles per day.

Over the entire week, I saw one obviously homeless person, one “maybe” and no encampments. It really was striking coming from the United States. ~3,000 homeless may be low, but they have drastically fewer than us.

The homeless tend to congregate in encampments. You'll sometimes see the rare one in a park or a station but usually you only see them if you happen to wander into an area where they've all set up.

Homeless in Japan don't panhandle or really bother regular people.

Go in late January, Shinjuku station, above Marunouchi line, 20-40 homeless sleeping in the main tunnel under Yasukuni-dori to get out of the cold. Go into the park behind city hall. Look in tbe bushes. See tents made from tarps. Same is true in many other parks. Also that park behind city hall hands out food to homeless people. I'm not saying Japan has lots of homeless people, only that they are there.

My impression from XX years in Japan is there is a strong ethic of "don't bother other people with your problems" so the homeless generally try to keep to themselves.

When were you last in Japan? The tent encampments were cleared out before the 2020 Olympics and have not come back.

I'm there now

Does Japan make a much more substantial investment in institutional mental health care?

No. Mental health in Japan is not broadly talked about. Anyone experiencing a mental health crisis is probably being cared for privately.

I’m not going to shill too hard for a tax prep company, but I’ve used FreeTaxUSA for years and am satisfied. Cheap, simple, no hidden fees I’ve noticed.

I've used them for five or six years. They keep getting better. The name sounds super sketchy, but they're legit.

They do charge for oddball forms, but they're super up front about that. Like when you select the forms they tell you the price. I have multiple income streams and multiple weirdo tax situations (farming, day job, three consulting firms, my own consulting) and it still only takes me 30 minutes to do my taxes with them.

Relative of a FreeTaxUSA employee here.

> The name sounds super sketchy, but they're legit.

I've told them to change their name, and my relative has told them to change their name.

Their marketing department is...dumb, IMO. (My relative told me about a semi-recent marketing campaign, and it was laughable.) But quite frankly, I prefer a company where the marketing department is the only incompetent one.

Tell your relative they're doing really good work, but a little change to their website might do wonders. Nothing crazy, maybe just something to make them not look like identity thieves.

>I prefer a company where the marketing department is the only incompetent one.

I have never thought about that, but it is exactly spot on. They're really good at what they do and really bad at selling it. Word of mouth seems to be the only way they get customers. I read about them on reddit and started using them. Now I tell everyone about that service.

> Tell your relative they're doing really good work, but a little change to their website might do wonders.

You're absolutely correct. Fortunately, my relative is aware. Unfortunately, she's tried to tell them, and they don't believe her.

It annoys her so much.

Tell her to show them this thread and how they're effectively turning into a laughing stock in spite of a great product (well, at least hoping my comment sends the message so she doesn't have to be so upfront about it :P).

Already did!

The name is sketchy and the website is just as bad. Every instinct I have says they're a shady scam site just waiting to steal my info.

But no, they're actually good and just have terrible marketing and design.

Sure makes doing my taxes interesting. I've been using them for three years

>But no, they're actually good and just have terrible marketing and design.

Maybe we should realize WE are in the wrong for conflating "Shiny, animation filled website" with "not scam".

I dunno, it's a little hard to trust a website is up to date on present day tax law when the entire site design came from a 1990s reject bin.

Those two are very different talent pools.

I think we've all learned to conflate these things from lived experience, not some mis-placed prejudice against ugly UIs.

What forms do they charge for? I've only seen them charge for state taxes.

I would love to keep using them, but looking at my current tax year, I want to file a specific state form that they do not support. For estimated taxes calculated by annualized income installment method because my income is tilted towards the end of the year. I haven't paid any estimated taxes for the first two quarters, and without this I'd have underpayment fees.

I did ask them about this two years ago, so if they don't add it for 2023, I'll have to look into other options.
