A couple of difficulties your writeup doesn't cover:

* password expiry/rotation - webpass uses the "sequence number" for this, and sequence numbers can be saved in localStorage or shared online through another channel

* policies. The "Site" dropdown references a json structure which can specify min/max lengths, character type rules etc

The implementation is pretty simple, but that's kinda the point :).


Is any of that really less the case with NoSQL?


Yes. The need for indices is easier to identify on NoSQL: if you want to grab a key in O(1) then you need an index.

However this simplicity comes not from eschewing SQL but because the queries you typically demand are simpler.


I'm not sure I follow that line of argument. If plain SQL is too low-level for you there's a wealth of ORMs that abstract away all the nitty-gritty details.


Up front: I'm thinking about leaving NoSQL because I hate its memory model.

SQL requires joins to get a "document" back. In order to properly optimize that process, you'll want an index. Most DBs don't do that (if I understand them correctly). See 1 for details about PG.

NoSQLs like Mongo lack joins. As a result you pack most of your joinable data into a document. When you need some manner of linked relation, you can store either the key to the collection, or a URI that goes through your API to that collection. In either case, you're pegging against an indexed key (probably the PK).

The sort of post-TMS emotional hypersensitivity he describes is "normal"? On one hand I wonder if I'm further on the spectrum than imagined and should seek help ... on the other, being overwhelmed by other folks' emotional state sounds crippling.


To me it sounds like he probably ended up on the far sensitive side of the spectrum, but well within normal. But, even if he was an adult, he didn't have the mental tools to handle the emotion - I read it as if he suddenly got the intense and open empathy children can have. You don't go to a six year old and describe the suffering of refugees in detail, because it'll give them nightmares. Just having a general idea of someone's suffering can be overwhelming for a child.

I know people that are very emotional, and can get overwhelmed by seeing others suffer -- but people that are absolutely "normal". I wouldn't call it "average" (for adults anyway) however.

I do think he's wrong about not having had a limited form of empathy: literally feeling other peoples pain is empathy. That doesn't mean he didn't care, or loved before - but it absolutely sounds like he had trouble: "understanding and entering into another's feelings" (from WordNet, my emphasis).

Sort of.

Pre TMS Robison was unable to distinguish subtle facial expressions. What does this really mean? It means he could not decode other peoples facial expressions and more importantly fire the mirror neurons that allow recognition of emotion. The research mentioned is important in that it shows some linkage to mirror neurons and activation in specific sections of the brain (inferior frontal cortex, anterior cingulate cortex and superior parietal lobe) which is the machinery unavailable to Robison before the experiment.

What does this really mean? Well the post TMS Robison recognises facial expressions and the neuronal machinery now understands how that expression effects others and acts on it. There a relationshipt with mirror neurons and facial reading ability. If you test people for facial recognition who have botox, they loose that ability to decipher emotion much like Robison.

Agreed. Everything I read that he said I can relate to. They are feelings that if presented with the same situation I think I would probably feel.

I read this story thinking about how difficult it would be to go from not feeling it, to feeling it. I've spent decades learning and adapting, he had no time. That would certainly be very overwhelming.


No, I'd say the hyper part of it is not normal, at least from my perspective and AFAIK I'm "normal". I suspect it would be somewhat like seeing the world in black and white and then suddenly being able to see colors. At first it would be overwhelming but eventually it would just be normal and drown out into the background. White noise.

He talks about customers coming into his shop and then him worrying about their problems. "Normal" to me is to be able to empathize with them, much like the skinned knee example in the article, but then being able to quickly move on. I mean I see someone get a skinned knee, I think to myself "ow! I bet that hurt!", but I don't think about it for the next hour. It's just a quick thought. The same would go for empathetic emotions, and like the knee, they're at a muted level compared to the original person's feeling of it.

Are you hinting at psychedelics? I'm familiar with their documented ability to open up different kinds of doors, but not this particular one. Colour me skeptical.


I've experienced it myself, felt identical to the author's experience, becoming aware. There's plenty of other untrustworthy anecdotal evidence[1] on the internet, but I'm not aware of any published research on the matter.

Skeptical seems a rational stance, and was mine prior to my experience.

Is there evidence that the feeling of being aware is because you are more aware, or just because you are high? I've heard people say that they have had incredibly meaningful experiences while on psychedelics, but I've also heard some dumb ideas from people who were smoking pot. So I'm curious if you think the reasons for feeling more like a person without aspergers were real at the time after you weren't high.

I hadn't sought to delve into the combination of ASD and trip reports, perhaps under the assumption that my experience was somehow typical (haha - that phrase seems familiar). It still strikes me as something very easy to mis-diagnose under the influence, but you've shown me that there may be something there.

The elephant in the room here is Javascript. No other scripting language has been so bloody awful in the past that a five-line module that saves you typing `array.prototype.forEach.call` or something that papers over the language's awful idea of equality comparison with three functions has been "useful" or "more than five minutes coding without references".

Granted, these modules don't do such useful things, but that's the environment their creators were immersed in.

Yep, but I can't remember the difference between Chrome Markdown, Firefox Markdown and Edge Markdown. - me, in the future. I have a hard enough time with GitHub Markdown and Reddit Markdown, as it is.



That was a jab at browsers and their history of not supporting specs identically. HTML5 is also a "strongly defined" specification and it didn't help.

I really want to see some papers, models or simulations to illustrate some of these effects - starting with the gravitational influence of ice sheets on sea level. This shouldn't be a difficult thing to illustrate numerically, but wow it would have a big impact on how (at least I) perceive the ice sheets.

So far, I haven't been able to dig anything up - there's some prose at [1] but nothing hard. A poster at [2]. Mitrovica's website [3] doesn't seem to have anything. It's late, so I'll have to postpone the search for now, but here's hoping other readers can help me :-).

If you still have some FORTRAN compiler installed you can run some simulations yourself [1]. There are two difficulties in 'easily' solving this problem. First of all the high level of feedback: changes in the sea level anywhere influence all other sea levels (conserving mass!). So you cannot solve this problem locally. Secondly, solving problems on spheres is difficult and expensive, so most sea level models solve the problem in spherical harmonics which is faster. (It's like the Fourier Transform, but instead of decomposing 1D signals into sines/cosines, you transform spherical shapes in more fundamental 'blobs'. See the examples here: [2] , after the header 'Jouons un peu avec les coeeficients harmoniques sphériques de la topography Terrestre'. You can see the individual first 0-6 'blobs', which when added form the first image reconstruction de l = 0 à 6. Which kind of resembles the Earth's topography already.) Spherical harmonics have some desirable mathematical properties and allow for quick simulations, but obviously formulating a problem in a different domain masks the actual physics being modeled. So I doubt you'll become wiser by studying these models...

Maybe you can be more convinced through [3] . Paolo Stocchi developed for the SELEN FORTRAN program.
