DHTML is server-side. You mean AJAX. Also, think of the page as an interface to a more lightweight web service. You should probably be parsing that directly.

He's referring to this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dhtml I'm not sure what DHTML you are thinking of that would be server-side.

Fuck, thinking of SHTML for some reason.

Use Charles or another proxy and find what feed the page is loading, then parse that. At least two requests need to be made anyway.

How does that constitute a conflict of interest? They make software that they find useful.

It's not a conflict of interest per se. I think I just consciously try to ignore their blog because I feel like its purpose is to sucker you into buying their stuff.

If you find one that's not, let me know!

I listened to an episode of the 37signals Podcast where Jason mentioned that some days they all show up at the office but are forbidden to speak to each other for productivity reasons. Many of his business decisions are questionable, glad to see someone challenging them.

It may just be me, but I like that work fulfills that "getting out of the house" desire every once and a while.

"all show up at the office but are forbidden to speak to each other for productivity reasons"

Does that mean that they aren't allowed to bug each other about work related things (or schedule meetings etc.) or are they literally not allowed to talk to each other? I'm hoping it is the former!

If Google put a little more thought into not only the visual design of its software, but also whether its software actually has a purpose (http://twitter.com/stevenf/status/10004051966), people might stop referencing them as a company with bad design that is successful anyway. I eagerly await that day. (Nothing personal, this has just been bugging me for awhile.)

But then he wouldn't have made Hacker News.

Except that both American Airlines and Zappos ignore the fact that clearer visual design translates to moving more shore and selling airline tickets.
