Was about to mention photopea as well...I should add that i'm by no means a person who uses this type of software on a regular basis....But whenever i need it i reach for either GIMP or photopea, and last few years, its been photopea far more often.

Honestly, i wish Adobe would still offer the conventional license, but with an additional hosting option that consumer can *choose* to activate and pay more for, or not...so that, basically:

* I pay a one-time license to use photoshop offline - and for however long i wish (understanding that after its end of life i may not eligible for security updates, but that's fair)

* Now, for storing of files, i would need to of course store them locally on my machine.

* But, if i *chose* to pay an ongoing subscription, that is when Adobe would host files for me....so i can still use their product offline, and they only charge me for use of online file storage...and i wouldn't mind if there were a premium on that charge, since i get that i would be paying for an ongoing storage service.

That gives me choice, it gives them money (both for licensing and ongoing hosting subscription), and i would figure everyone would be content....

...but, i guess the current world does not work that way, eh? So, i guess i will continue to avoid their products, heading towards alternatives like photopea, Gimp, etc.

When i started dabbling in python back in the day, and when i had a need for cgi-bin sort of functionality (for simple web front-end), i think it was the sunsetting of popularity of python cgi, and more of the rise of WSGI...so there was less blog posts out there showing best practices around cgi, and more on wsgi...and to me it often felt like i was doing more unnecessary work via wsgi...but then, maybe i'm old and stodgy, and came from the php world prior to dabbling python? Then again, even though i feel i am more mentally sharper now than my younger self...it sure feels like back in the day i was able to be more productive sooner...and nowadays there's just so much setup and harnesses to begin with.

I think started a little earlier, back when every site had a cgi-bin directory.

And, yeah, so much ... cruft now, and I rarely hear reasons for the tradeoff, other than "should" and "It will be great."

And if it is so great, why did it go away?

Thanks for making me feel good knowing that i'm not the only one feeling that there's too much cruft in some areas nowadays! :-)

Simiarly, i either hear no discussion about tradeoffs, or they tend to be so vauge or weak...and it eventually boils down to "Ain't no body got time to figure out the 'right way', and this new $thing is popular, so this new way is the right way everyone...".

As far as why it went away, i frankly don;'t know...but i imagine for the same reasons other good stuff goes away: maybe contributors stopped working on it, or there is money to be made in the new ways, or the zeitgeist of the new way (due to management consultants whispering in the ear of IT senior leaders) takes over the attention of the everyday devs, etc. Then again, i suppose if one were to preserve certain local infra. in a way to use old stuff, i guess one may still be able to run things the old way...but that's an uphill battle, and likely not worth it.

I also use zoho (for mail, calendar, contacts) for my family and I...and yeah the first time i set it up with DavX5, it was odd to say the least...though not sure if it was zoho's fault, or maybe both some possible glitch with zoho and DavX5, that didn't quite jive with my brain - at first. Now, i see no issues with Davx5 and zoho cal and contacts...at least it sync really well on my android phone. I have not tried Evolution for years (and certainly not with zoho yet), since i tend to default to thunderbird...But am about to set up my partner on one of the Gnome-based linux distros once their Windows 10 dies later this year...and considering how they like to use their computer and their workflow, gnome seems most appropriate for them, so have been considering suggesting for them to us Evolution as email client...so will be interesting to see how zoho works there. (Glad to hear it works for you!) As i noted, i like to use thunderbird, and as far as mail and calendar, actually i guess i have been lucky, since zoho seems to be working great for me - and for a couple of years now! However, contacts synching has never worked right - like, never at all. Sure i can export contacts from zoho and import them into thunderbird...so the issue is not the basics of contacts functionality within thunderbird per se...but the syncing between t'bird and zoho is certainly an issue, and have not had a chance to dive deeply enough to see if the issue is a t'bird issue or zoho...although like calendaring on my android phone, contact synching is not an issue with zoho from my phone (again via Davx5)...so, i'm confused. But, agreed with your points: i'm happ[y zoho customer, but they're not perfect...then again, at their low costs, i kinda can't complain too much. ;-)

Its specifically melting the underneath of North america....because, the earth is flat...everyone knows that! /s

But, let's not worry, because Trump will build a wall, er, heat shield, and no more pesky nuclear fusion-based heat will ever penetrate our 1%-er bunkers, er i mean, our atmosphere to melt our continent....and if some heat should get in, well, then ICE will be there to help save the day! /s

:-D

Oooooh @b0bben, you got me hooked with that awesome aesthetic! Please keep working on it! I'd be interested in using this app!

A few rhetorical questions:

* Will this be (similar to discord) centrally hosted/managed? That is, would it be like other chat apps in that there is a central server, and clients connect to/are dependent upon it? Or....will it be more federated (like email, matrix)...or will it be peer-to-peer? (I'm sure the more centralized, likely the easier for you to implement, but i figured i'd ask...since i tend to favor less centralized options...but that's just me.)

* If you go the route of open sourcing this, and possibly even enabling self-hosting...have you considered what techstack would be used, such that, it might be easier for folks to spin up their own, and hence you might get more participation from folks who more likely might be into this kind of approach (and cyberpunk aeshetic)? (I know docker, containers are a thing nowadays and may in many cases the techstack becomes less important and often eases the self-hosting burden, but, figured i'd ask.)

I should clarify: NONE of my questions are demands...This is your baby, and you should build it as YOU WISH! My questions are merely rhetorical, and you don't even need to respond to...merely giving you some food for thought. I love me some cyberpunk, and not only aesthetic, but especially the freedoms and approach to libre-centric "lifestyle"...so a cool-looking chat app like what your video showed would pair well with folks who think about at least some of the things i asked about above. ;-)

Anyway, cheers to you on this app, and keep on building it; looks great!!!!!

thx for the kind words!

to your (awesome) questions: right now it's centrally managed. it's just easier to build this way and use existing services. i use own apis, firebase and livekit.

at some point i'd LOVE to work on this full-time and live off of it, that's my end-goal.

everything is doable, but it would/will take work, but i wouldn't mind creating a self-hosted version for the 4 of you that really really want that ;)

> ...right now it's centrally managed. it's just easier to build this way and use existing services. i use own apis, firebase and livekit.

Yeah, totally makes sense, centralized is easier. no hamr, no foul. :-)

> ...i'd LOVE to work on this full-time and live off of it, that's my end-goal.

Well, if/when you launch this, I'd be interested in paying you to manage the hosting of it. so, you jhave at least 1 willing potential customer!

> ... i wouldn't mind creating a self-hosted version...

Remember, how i want a self-hosted option? That still is true...but i likely would prefer to pay YOU to manage the hosting. In other words, I gladly pay devs/teams/orgs to manage hosted apps for me...but I always LIKE that they offer me a choicee to self-host something if/whenever I choose. Basically, if a company gives me the opportunity to leave them at any time...that in a way earns my trust, and that helps me want to pay them for their service...assuming their service is reliable, well-managed of course. So, yeah, self-hosted is the gold standard to live up to...but, don;t get it twisted: if you build in self-hosting AS WELL AS offer paid plans, i will def. pay you! Remember that, because there are TONS of people like me, who on principle want open source, self-hosted options, but who will gladly PAY for someone to manage said open source apps/services.

Again, cheers and kudos!

that's a really interesting take on self-hosting, you've given me a lot of food-for-tought here, thank you. I now have a subreddit setup for this project at https://www.reddit.com/r/mollyconsole/ if you wanna keep tabs on changes (or just install and come say hi in MOLLYCORP crew)

How interesting! I'm excited by all the energy lately that i've seen around more text-based fun stuff, from Gemini to tilde communities to more TUIs/TUI apps, to this ssh powered set of services! Keep 'em coming!

pico.sh is not new by any means. I was using them ~3 years ago (or maybe even for longer), with their lists.sh service.

After I opened my blog, they launched prose.sh, and rest of the services soon after, but since I settled on my blog, and didn't want to change horses, and they discontinued lists.sh, I had to part ways with them.

I admire what they've built though, and wish them best of luck.

I have a feeling that ever since late January 2025 in the U.S., oversight and regulatory overview might be more lax than in the past, and there will less of those "pesky" fines and criminal investigations...which begs the question: will 2025 be the year of increased negligent and/or nefarious behavior - both from corporate entities as well as hackers?

...I gotta go take a walk near some nature and flowers, because i just depressed myself with my comment. :-(

And your comment was based on a feeling, not on evidence or actions.

* BitMEX the company and its founders received a Presidential pardon in the past week. https://www.cnbc.com/2025/03/28/trump-pardon-bitmex-crypto-e...

* Several Consumer Protection Safety Board lawsuits were withdrawn in February: https://apnews.com/article/cfpb-drops-capital-one-rocket-law...

* New York Mayor Eric Adams's corruption case was dismissed in an apparent quid-pro-quo. White House official Thomas Howan asserted that he had an agreement with Adams on the morning news show Fox and Friends. Evidence indicated Adams accepted a hundred thousand dollars in benefits and bribes in exchange for helping the Turkish government certify a building permit. https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/justice-department/trumps-b...

There was an Executive Order [0], aimed at removing regulation.

I don't think any amount of evidence of actions would convince you this isn't a vibe, but a clear pattern.

What you're referring to @j2kun is named a *social reader*. See: https://indieweb.org/social_reader I'm sure there other examples of software/clients besides those portrayed on indieweb.org too.

Agreed! And, i would call such a site/portal/etc., something like "Awesome Pain"...I guess it could serve as a repo of anything from:

* startup ideas...

* to gotchas for devs to think about fixing for their respective apps/services...

* to a study in best practices, or maybe what not todos...

...etc. ;-)

I'm sure you're right, but its a sad state of affairs. I mean, is this what Marc Andreessen meant when he stated that famous phrase about software eating the world or something? That is, that software will get so crappy, so bloated that it will simply engulf the world like the Blob from that old horror/sci-fi movie? I'm sure its not, i'm just being silly of course. And, i know its the old fogey in me, but i sure hope more lowfi efforts like Gemini, tildes communites, etc. prosper, and create other similar creativity...Because with all the processing power that exists in the world, among the things that slow our machines to a crawl include a freaking chat app??? Seems like such a waste. (Not blaming you of course, simply went off on a tangent from my frustration with bloatware like Slack, etc.)

You're right. just look at the devolution of Windows by generation. As everyone on HN comments on, how terrible Windows 11 is compared to windows 10, compared to windows 7, etc. (bloat, unnecessary apps, intrusiveness and so on.) Advertising? WTF? We all thought - when we were running Windows 3.11, imagine if we had a faster computer ?!

> ...We all thought - when we were running Windows 3.11, imagine if we had a faster computer ?!

Yep, that was me back in the day; i thought the same! :-)
