we measured this at our last startup anonymously; seems there is some research behind it. we didn't have enough data points to really gather much meaning out of it though.
Not sarcastic... I didn't know about FlashFill. I looked at the videos, and it seems that it's not as powerful as this tool. In excel the results would be a custom cell format combined with custom text functions.
Not sure about the implementation in Excel. At least the paper (POPL 2011) describes more powerful functions, containing e.g. case distinctions and simple loops. There are some examples in there. I'm not an Excel expert, but would be surprised if cell format could do that.
I could have used this hundreds of time in Visual Studio.
We often process messages with hundreds of fields. So I will have a class from specs (usually excel) with a number of properties, then I need a method to populate each of those from some other object, then I need a method that does the reverse - populates some other object from the properties.
This happens over and over for us. Typically I just use a Notepad++ macro. But I could probably use this as it stands, just having it in visual studio would be really incredible.
I've started a successful event series in the fitness space, so I know a little about event promotion and operations. I was more interested in the communities that would like to get involved in this.
Our current event company runs events in 30 major markets in the US, so it can be based anywhere. I'd probably do the first one in the mid-Atlantic, but would quickly organize a others in the Bay Area/Austin/Charlotte markets if things went well.
So, first event, in DC/Richmond area?
If you want to get involved, email me. It's kyle.redinger@gmail.com.
I think the meetups and small events are great, but they are really geared towards people who are super enthusiasts, not those people who want a more casual, approachable racing event. Just some thoughts.
Thanks for all the great feedback! Keep it coming!
I've built GIS databases w/ parcel data, owner data, tax data and zoning layers of high growth Virgnia and North Carolina jurisdiction. It's a very time consuming and ad hoc process. Some jurisdictions charge a lot of money for this data. If anyone has any interest in exploring a parcel based CRM startup concept, contact me. There is a lot of demand for this service. I have a few paying consulting customers and thinking about building it into a SaaS tool to power real estate development.
