I don’t think you understand what canon is if you think that. Canon is simply internally consistent story telling.

It’s agreeing that A follows B and C follows B, etc. It’s agreeing that “A” and “a” are two forms of the same thing, and make the same vowel sound. You run into trouble when you say “A” makes a “k” sound and the lowercase of “a” is “w”.

By that metric, I wonder what the PEGI rating is for solitaire and free cell. It uses the same deck of cards as poker without being poker.

But 10-15 years experience has to count for something. Why do senior and principle positions still need to leet code interviews?

Because there are a lot of fraudsters.

With social skills and salesmanship, you can never have delivered top-class work even after 15 years as a developer.

Quite a few people know how to "play the game". That's pretty easy if your superiors have no idea about software development themselves.

This story is crazy because 10 years old is so old! That’s 5th grade! It’s almost old enough to baby sit small children!

Not surprised. It’s an unwinnable argument.

However, I stand by my belief that Social Media is a cancer on society. I divide history between “before Twitter” and “after Twitter”. Facebook went to shit when they started copying Twitter.

I've come to believe that society simply does not scale. Humans were never meant to be exposed to instant global connections.

That’s not a really compelling argument. Facebook is his company. He steers the ship. People are complaining that he’s telling the people rowing the boat to run over people in the water. Whether his hand is on the steering wheel is moot.

Secondly, him not directly feeding starving people in SF is not the same. It’s unrelated. He is not the mayor of SF, but he is the CEO of Meta.

People care because it’s tied to salary bands.

This may be the best answer to the title question.

but not between companies. Many a staff engineer has been down leveled quite a bit moving to FAANG companies, and they still get a raise.

It makes more sense to add this to Wordpad, but didn’t they kill Wordpad in Windows 11? Keep Notepad simple.

I'm not sure how they built this thing, but it makes sense to me on the face of it: Notepad should be the thinnest wrapper possible around a simple textbox, and the generated thing they're showing should be built into the widget itself so it's exposed to all apps in the OS (much like macOS exposes emacs/readline-style shortcuts everywhere that uses a default textbox).

The last time they significantly improved the text box was adding in support for mixed LTR and RTL characters around Windows 2000.

And arguably Windows 10 adding in the emoji IME when you hit WindowsKey + .

Same reason I don’t like FSD even though as an engineer it’s cool technology: I enjoy driving.

It’s like cooking your own meal versus going to a restaurant. I enjoy cooking a lot.

Summary of article:

  - Beginning: My custom auth works great for last 7 years, but looking for auth provider in new project so I don’t have to “roll my own auth”

  - Actual reviews: These are all awful, broken and/or incomplete. Clerk is expensive.

  - Conclusion: Use clerk if you can afford it
