One thing we didn't talk much about is if it's...a good idea. I imagine many of these folks will switch back into the technical track for a bit. But the reality that Tess speaks to is that many more experienced eng managers are burning out (pandemic management has been no joke), and so companies are tapping on earlier career folks to step into management. For folks who don't opt out of that situation, how do you make the most of it?

Yes! Agreed =)

Good point--I should have clarified, but this is more often a referral. I should have called it "first point of contact" or something more appropriate. Often we don't get the actual resume in into much later in the process...

For the one-day projects, we typically do not give projects of things we might use, for that reason. We give a sort of related simple app. We are currently < 20 so we'll see how this goes once we expand beyond that =)

We're also hiring! Check out our jobs page: http://www.pulse.me/jobs

We've used moocards and are happy with the results: http://us.moo.com/

Toying with Moo's website at the moment and I must say, this is excellent. Thank you for the recommendation, I had never heard of them before.

moo has a 10-card free trial if you are worried: http://us.moo.com/partner/sample

I posted about this issue a week or so ago: http://www.jeanhsu.com/2011/05/19/startup-or-big-company-aft...

A great point he makes is about friends and family (especially those not in silicon valley)--it's hard for them to understand why you would give up a stable job for uncertainty.

Not because of the comment in the video, but because I can't imagine that that startup culture and living/working space would be appealing to any female engineer.

I think it's a bit presumptuous of you to talk on behalf of all female engineers. I know at least two that would not mind living there.

really? interesting...any females on HN that wouldn't mind living there?

Yes, me. Given the right company, I would be all for that. His "Females?! In MY ridiculous hacker house?!" was not a sell, but otherwise I see no problem. That startup culture and that space might not be appealing to you, but please don't speak for all females.
