So you eat both, have ground barley with something to make it more palatable and cook with hulled barley in meals? Seems like it's a better solution than psyllium fiber.
I grind hulled barley to a powder and then boil it with RO water in the microwave. Total cook time in my microwave for the ~2tbl I consume is 2 minutes and 10 seconds.
I put in a little stevia/monk fruit for taste.
Because the end result is basically a thickened drink with a rather neutral flavor I'll often throw in my 3rd shot of espresso for the day or just drink it as is while still hot.
A lot of cultures that are long lived tend to have barley based drinks but of course isolating barley's effect is a fools errand, it's just correlation at best.
I started playing with barley for a "cream of wheat" esq experience, which was actually way better than cream of wheat or oats but I found that the water absorption of barley is so high that for gastro purposes it's more consistent to add enough water that it remains a drink.
The upside bonus is that due to the mechanism of action you can start with very low volumes of barley and it doesn't give you gastro distress the way other types of fiber supplementation can, basically the soluble fiber slows down the movement of food through the intestines giving your gut more digestive time to create a homogenous, gelled slurry making the defection process closer to ideal texture.
I now also spend far less time on the toilet and it only takes 2 minutes and a single hot beverage every morning.
One other positive side effect is I've found that my overall hydration stays more consistent as well.
Thanks for the info! I'm always using psyllium but reading more and hearing about barley it seems like combining the two for my morning and evening drink might be the way to go.
Sounds good! I used to worry about insoluble fiber more but barley's been very effective for me so I dropped psyllium, it's method of action is improves fermentation so it definitely takes a few weeks to normalize everything. I found that with supplementing with insoluble fiber (psyllium) food was moving through my digestion too fast.
There’s a headphone port in the Quest 3. I just got a $20 set of wired headphones for it. I think you can connect via Bluetooth for wireless but I have t tried.
I have guy friends I go mountain biking, skiing, mountaineering, play board games with, etc... but the deepest relationships have been found in the yoga studio with the women there. When another guy shows up I make sure to say hi and introduce myself. We're also working on implementing an open share space once a week for all genders to come and connect. Yoga is the one thing I've found that is more holistic than any other sport/activity.
I don't like calling because it's not like it used to be. Everything is so damned asynchronous these days even voice calls where it's supposed to be synchronous. When conversations were over copper/analog, yes I was younger, I enjoyed talking on the phone much more. Back then it felt like whether it was one person or three on the line there was actual presence and you could have two people talking on top of each other no problem.
Now, every conversation, whether it's by phone or zoom, feels like a struggle of who's going to take up the air time, trying not to talk over one another, dealing with delay, etc... It doesn't feel natural at all and there's little to no presence. Having smart phones makes it so much easier to tune out on a call and scroll reddit, check headlines or play a game. I agree that it's less convenient and takes too long for most things. I'd rather check in once a day with someone via text than have one longer phone conversation once a week.
My friend has a few volts from 2013-2018 (that he loves) and I usually borrow one for trips to see family and friends 12-16 hours away rather than drive my truck. I think they're great vehicles. ~40mpg at 80-90mph on the highway is really good though it does take premium for that 40+ mpg and it has a smallish tank so you have to stop a little more often. Once you reach your destination all driving is done on electric and charges overnight on a regular outlet/level 1. Their maintenance is surprisingly low for what seems like a complex system.
Crazy to me that Chevy has abandoned their PHEV platform considering others, like Toyota, are in such high demand. Speaking of which I spent a week with a Rav4 Prime and found that equally as impressive range-wise as a volt.
I've never really enjoyed down cushions on a functional everyday couch. Feathers inevitably make they're way out of the pillow, through the cushion's exterior fabric and into your back/arm/leg/etc... or just around the room. They lose loft and aren't as easy to replace as say cutting a piece or two of foam and inserting those. My current couch has a down cushion on the top of the seated part and backrest and when they go I'll replace them with memory foam.
Desserts can definitely send your levels quite high but I don't think I'd qualify some biryani and naan with a reading of 80 as unhealthy. You probably ate a healthy portion and left it at that. Is 80 not well within the normal range?
The Ministry for the Future presents these ideas where the ruling class and then the proletariat is forced into using ecofriendly modes of transportation like fast yachts and dirigibles for long distance travel. I imagine a future where we'll see this but it's going to take some serious unrest before the ultra wealthy give up their private jets.
