A few decades ago I graduated with a BFA and Business minor from a small liberal arts school and then went to a six month 'boot camp' for COBOL a few years later.

I L O V E the fact that I was fortunate enough to do both. I feel that my liberal arts background makes my life so much richer.

One of my sons graduated from BC with a Computer Science degree. I think the combo platter of CS degree from an excellent liberal arts school is best of both worlds. If you can do it, do it!

And U.S. companies are historically more productive.

Actually, nations that offer much more generous maternal and paternal child leave are right in the same range of productivity as the US, with some above the US.

It takes someone who loves the outdoors to appreciate it.

I love the outdoors, fished plenty as a kid, but don't do it anymore. I'd rather be backpacking, climbing, paddling my kayak -- anything that gets me outdoors _and_ gets my body and brain in sync with each other. Fishing just doesn't do that for me.

I'd give up canoeing for fishing. Maybe you could make fishing more attractive by taking up canoeing.

Agreed. What a waste.

I don't like sports. Why do these cities keep spending all this money and resources on sports arenas when there are homeless people? There is no value to me. What a waste.

Or I can realize my interests are a very small subset of human interests.

Chris and Hamish,

Do you have anyone using Substack for a 'news aggregation' sort of newsletter? I am curious.

I have written software that makes it simple for me to curate ice hockey news and place links and article summaries on http://HockeyBias.com every morning. I have been thinking of providing the data in an email newsletter as well.

Thank you.

Ooh hockey!

Curation with commentary can be very valuable. That's a lot of what Bill Bishop does with Sinocism (https://nb.sinocism.com/)

If you can do a roundup that lets people stay up to date in a way they find valuable, it could definitely be a good idea. I'd encourage you to try it as a free newsletter on Substack and see if you can get people reading it regulary!

I'm with you! I'd love a smartphone that has a great camera, access to map & weather info and nothing more!

I used to have a Nokia 6700 Slide that was pretty much that, but sadly it died. No GPS though, just maps.

My wife and I moved to the Midwest 23 years ago because the homelessness and - less importantly - the traffic (in SF) were getting bad back then (relative to the previous ten years).

One of the changes at that time was having to pay a homeless person to 'watch our car for us' when we went to get a bite or see a band south of market.

Awfully sad scenario and well-documented in this article.

Used to work across the street from a high-rise with a peregrine nest. Loved watching them chow down on their prey outside my window!

As a person with type 1 diabetes I would like to add that, just as one has to learn what amounts of insulin to inject when one first starts using insulin with his/her given diet, one would need to learn what amounts of insulin are appropriate for the days one is on this diet.

And if you had to abort the fast a few times before you home in on your insulin needs during the fast, that is not a life or death situation.

I feel you are being too cautious. Please chime in if you feel I'm being cavalier. Thanks!

I too use a continuous glucose monitor.
