I have been looking for something that would ingest a decade of old Word and PowerPoint documents and convert them into a standardized format where the individual elements could be repurposed for other formats. This seems like a critical building block for a system that would accomplish this task.

Now I need a catalog, archive, or historian function that archives and pulls the elements easily. Amazing work!

Can't you just start with unoconv or pandoc, then maybe use an LLM to clean up after converting to plain text?

Which decade? DOCX and PPTX is just zipped XMLs, seems pretty standard to me

This is what makes Hacker News such an astounding resource for thought provoking insight. I take the American perspective on free speech as nearly a theological imperative despite the problematic side effects. The alternatives strike me as far worse. Free speech drives faster resolution and remediation to the socially unacceptable. The ideas and behaviors highlighted by the reviewer are not new to society and collectively we do not stand in a place in a place, "never before seen." Our tools for communicating, identifying, and correcting the evils in this world are better than ever. Evil is just so damned ingenious. That isn't speech's fault.

> I take the American perspective on free speech as nearly a theological imperative

Is this the one where books get pulled from school libraries if they mention the existence of gay people?

(as I argue lower down, the US has a whole bunch of restrictions on speech that it avoids dealing with by saying "not speech" https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=44029515 )

Are they really? It feels like fascist propaganda never spread so fast and so far than with social media. X is infested with neo-nazis casually discussing the jewish question or fantasizing about a coming race war on the front page. Fox News is a well-oiled oligarch-funded lie machine that never stops spinning narratives in service of power.

To me, that such a large portion of the country is gleefully cheering on ICE parting sick children from their parents [1] is proof enough of the absolute failure of our systems of information and free speech laws in addessing the rising issue of right-wing populism.

The kimberlite source of these phytoliths and their age makes me question our confidence in their origination from the arctic surface. Is it at all possible this material was cycled through plate tectonics which subducted it from a southern source and eventually ejected far north through volcanic action? I mean, a lot could happen over 48M years...

The sort of trip it would need to go through to make that journey doesn't make survival of the fossil very plausible.

Even a 'microscopic siliceous structure', which is what they're talking about here? To be clear, I am in no position whatsoever to challenge your statement, just curious as to why it would be unlikely for something invisible to the human eye to be shifted around the planet via plate tectonics (which seems entirely plausible to the layperson that I am).

Real sailors arrive using the "colada" effect but lately there's been a growing reliance on the "chelada" effect since Modelo introduced those tasty red cans! They go down fast and make a day of sailing go even faster.

This problem has already been solved by the MRI machines at your local airport. Cost and performance are not the issues. For $25 your luggage gets an MRI that automatically differentiates between organic molecules in seconds. How easily could this be adapted for free annual screenings at the mall?

But that's not the objective, and so your research is doomed

The medical equipment industry will not suffer fools who don't understand 'regulatory capture' and 'rent seeking.'

Those hospital machines are expensive and rare for reasons that have very little to do with cost or performance

"put down the release and step away"

An important comment.

"What's important" depends upon who is asking the question and who they are asking the question to.

I am a MacOS user now, but I wonder how Microsoft are faring in the aspects of stability, removal of bloat, fixing tech debt, refactoring of code to improve readability and bloat, addressing security issues, speeding up the builds, ensuring device driver stability on supported hardware, improving support for applications and use cases, improving actual as well as perceived speeds, and so on.

love this

so put your big boy pants on and compete!!

Don't run under grampa Biden's rocking chair and hope he doesn't glide over your tail.

Tell that to China that does not allow Facebook, Instagram and Youtube in China. They have access to 400 million americans but we can't have access to 1 billion Chinese people? China was running a long time a go

Western platforms were losing to Chinese ones in PRC before they were blocked. When hammer came down to enforce onerous human moderation on ALL platforms in PRC, western platforms chose not to comply, because adding layer of human moderation at the time wasn't worth the cost/optics. This was a time when PRC domestic platforms had 10,000s of humans in the loop and western ones had essentially none. Why do you think Facebook and Google both had internal projects to re-enter PRC market after they scaled up human moderation in west? That's what fair competition is - facebook, google et al blocking what PRC gov wants blocked and handing over info on dissident according to who PRC says are dissidents. All expensive things PRC platforms has to do. AKA "fair" competitive enironment. Thinking western platforms should compete in PRC without following PRC laws is insipid. Fair would also be the TikTok/Oracle JV where Oracle responsible for US interests, like PRC has for Microsoft. Nevermind half the reason western platforms were blocked was because they were unmoderated platforms that helped organize extremist attacks that caused 2009 minority riots. It's one thing to block TikTok if TikTok allowed 9/11 and refused to do anything about it, it's another when they do what every other US platform does, but just better.
